Year 6
Welcome to Year 6's Page
Our class teacher is Mrs Smith. Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Sharp and Mrs Edwards.
We hope you find this page useful for keeping up to date with your child's learning in Year 6. We have recently updated our curriculum maps in December 2023 so there may be some variations to the order in which we teach our topics.
Please feel free to use the knowledge organisers to ask your child questions about their learning and whether they know the meanings of any of the vocabulary.
Our recommended reads are chosen from high quality texts that may either be engaging for your child to read or have read to them.

What are we learning in Year 6 this Summer Term?
This half term we will be continuing with our Viking topic in history and lots of our writing will be linked to our knowledge gained from this topic- about the Norse worlds, ways of life and Viking battles. We have already had a fantastic Viking day workshop where we held lots of weapons, ground flour with mill-stones and acted out some battles! Our French will be linked to Vikings too; we will be learning how to describe Viking warriors using French vocabulary. We are also excited to carry out some landscape art based on the Viking realms and carry out a D/T project where we make Viking stew!
In Science we will be carrying out lots of experiments about friction forces- and have already practised using forcemeters to measure force. Next half term we will be learning about evolution and are really excited to use the book series 'Flanimals' by Ricky Gervais to be creative in the topic. In RE we will consider points of view about evolution and consider how to be Christian whilst also understanding the theory of evolution.
After half term our main topic will be rivers and we are excited to make models and go on a field trip to the River Gade. We will also further our learning from the Spring Term on classifying plants. In music we will compose music using a range of percussion instruments to create river imagery and we will read texts that have river settings.
In PE, we will be doing cricket, ultimate frisbee and athletics, and when working towards the end of year production- which will be Joseph and his amazing technicolour dreamcoat, we will create dances, applying knowledge of choreography from previous learning. We also have our residential to PGL to look forwards to where we can develop teamwork, independence and courage.
In Year 6, we have so many fun projects and events to look forwards to but we are trying to focus on enjoying each thing as it comes up!
What have Year 6 been doing?
Summer Term News: Year 6 have loved learning more about the Vikings this term and have made excellent warriors and acted out some sagas. They loved having Bjorn come in to school, where they got to hold weapons, make flour and touch lots of artefacts.
Recently, they cooked Viking stew as a mini D/T topic. Each team created their stew and then they evaluated them at the end of the day. Our classroom still smells!
We have also been busy carrying out experiments in science- the water and air resistance ones were particularly fun.
During SATs week, Year 6 carried out a textiles project. It was therapeutic working with wool and fabric. They are very proud of their posters.
Our trip to PGL in Lincolnshire was awesome! So many instructors said how polite and respectful we were...even in the rain!
This half term, we have enjoyed learning about rivers. We visited the River Gade and carried out fieldwork skills. More recently we have been doing a project all about evolution and adaptation, whilst working VERY hard on our production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat!
We recently visited St Albans Cathedral where we did workshops about relationships with each other, the world and ourselves.
Our Flanimal project has been super-fun in Science. Ricky Gervais wrote some great books about made-up creatures and we each created lifecycles, evolutionary timelines, offspring and more! They looked great for Open Evening!
Sports Day was very exciting this year...and the rain stayed away! Ruby house won overall but everyone had a great day completing a number of athletic activities at Jarman Park. We particularly liked the high jump and long jump.
