Reception Class: Everyday Hereos
This half term, our topic is ‘Everyday Heroes.’ We will dive into the world of jobs and explore the many roles people play in our communities. We’ll think about what we might want to be when we grow up and learn about the emergency services, including the police, firefighters, paramedics. We will discover how these everyday heroes keep us safe and help others. To bring the topic to life, we will explore the world of superheroes through the story ‘Supertato.’ The children will use their creativity to design and make their very own superhero vegetable and write imaginative stories about their vegetable’s heroic adventures.
We will also learn about life in the past by looking at how household items have changed over time. Through discussions and comparisons, we will learn about a world before modern technology. We hope some grandparents will visit the class to share their memories, showing the children how different life was when they were young.
Phonics
This term, we are continuing our work on Phase 3 phonemes. We will practice reading and writing new words, making sure our letter formation is correct. We will continue to develop our blending skills and continue to make great progress with our reading.
Literacy
We are reading two exciting books this term: ‘Bog Baby’ and ‘I will never, not ever eat a tomato.’ These books will inspire us to explore descriptive language and imaginative writing. The children will write descriptions of foods they enjoy and will also have the chance to try some new and unusual vegetables, using their senses to describe their taste, smell, and texture. We will also use ‘Bog Baby’ as a springboard for discussions about caring for others and the natural world, which will inspire creative storytelling and character descriptions.
Maths
In Maths, our focus will be on numbers 5, 6, and 7. We will investigate what these numbers look like and explore their relationships using patterns, cubes, and other resources. The children will practice counting forwards and backwards, finding number bonds, and spotting patterns within these numbers. We will also introduce mathematical vocabulary linked to comparison, such as “greater than,” “less than,” “equal to,” and “difference.” These concepts will be applied through fun, practical activities, like sorting, measuring, and problem-solving challenges.
PE
Our focus in PE is dance! The children will learn how to copy and repeat simple movement sequences to music. We’ll introduce the idea of using counts to match movements to the beat of the music and explore dance concepts such as shape, level, and direction. Children will have the opportunity to create their own short routines, experimenting with high and low movements, traveling steps, and turning actions. By the end of the unit, we hope to see confident, creative dancers!
PSHE
This term’s theme in PSHE is ‘Dreams and Goals’. We will talk about how to handle challenges, manage feelings when things don’t go as planned, and set achievable goals for ourselves. Through stories, circle time, and role-playing activities, we’ll help children identify strategies to stay positive and keep trying even when something feels difficult. We will celebrate each child’s efforts, fostering a growth mindset and confidence.
Art
In Art, we are exploring the work of Wassily Kandinsky, focusing on his famous use of shape and color. The children will create their own Kandinsky-inspired artwork, experimenting with circular patterns, bold colors, and layering techniques. These pieces will be displayed in our school art gallery. We will also practice joining materials in creative ways, making paper snakes, flowers, and other 3D crafts. Children will use scissors, glue, and other tools to improve their fine motor skills while creating imaginative and beautiful projects.
DT
In Design Technology, we will be inspired by ‘Supertato’ to design and create superhero vegetables. The children will develop their cutting, sticking, and assembly skills to transform ordinary vegetables into characters with capes, masks, and unique features. This project will also link to storytelling, as children will create imaginative backstories for their superhero vegetables.
Music
In Music, we will explore how to match actions to lyrics, helping children develop their sense of rhythm and timing. We’ll also practice playing percussion instruments, learning to follow patterns and rhythms within songs. Toward the end of the term, the children will work in small groups to create their own themed music pieces, choosing instruments and experimenting with sounds to tell a story or convey a mood.
Religious Education
This term in RE, we will be exploring the concept of belonging. The children will discuss what it means to belong to a family, a group, or a community, and we will identify the different ways people show they belong, such as through special clothing, symbols, or actions. We will also learn about important cultural and religious celebrations, including Chinese New Year, where we will explore traditions such as dragon dances. As we approach Shrove Tuesday, we will talk about its significance and the tradition of making pancakes. We will then focus on Lent, introducing the idea of reflection and kindness in preparation for Easter.
Computing
In Computing, the children will engage with remote control toys such as Beebots, helping them develop basic programming skills like sequencing, direction, and problem-solving. These activities will introduce early concepts of coding in a fun and interactive way. We will also be participating in Safer Internet Day, where we will focus on learning simple but essential strategies for staying safe online. The children will be taught about recognizing trusted adults, keeping personal information private, and making safe choices when using technology at home.
It’s going to be an exciting and creative term. We look forward to seeing the children learn, grow, and shine as they explore these fascinating topics and activities!
