Spring 2 - Adventure awaits
This half term in Reception, we are going on an exciting learning journey with our theme ‘Adventure Awaits’! Through stories, Maths, Science, and creative activities, we will explore different types of journeys, both real and imaginary, while developing our curiosity and understanding of the world around us.
Topic
In our topic lessons, we will explore different types of journeys, considering how people and animals travel on land, in the sky, on water, and even in space. As we move through the half term, we will begin to explore fairytale journeys, thinking about how characters in traditional stories travel through magical settings. We will learn about different modes of transport and their uses, comparing how people travel today with how they did in the past. In our science-based activities, we will test cars on ramps, investigating how changes in height and surface type affect speed and movement. We will also explore the concept of floating and sinking by experimenting with different materials and objects in water. As part of our history learning, we will study significant explorers and adventurers, such as Amelia Earhart, and think about what exists beyond Earth as we begin to explore space.
Literacy
Our focus books this half term are ‘The Naughty Bus’ and ‘We’re Going to Find the Monster’. Inspired by The Naughty Bus, we will reflect on our own experiences from our coach journey on our recent school trip, and use this to write about our own adventures. We will then be creating a new adventure for our naughty bus. When exploring We’re Going to Find the Monster, we will design and describe our own unique monsters, thinking carefully about what they look like, how they behave, and where they might live. We will also consider the journey to find them, creating our own maps and using positional language to plan our route.
Maths
In Maths, we will focus on developing our understanding of pattern by recognising, creating, and continuing repeating sequences using shapes, colours, and objects. We will also classify and sort objects based on their characteristics, such as size, shape, and colour. As we progress, we will rehearse our number bonds to 5 and 10, exploring different ways to combine numbers and building fluency in early addition and subtraction. We will also deepen our understanding of how numbers are made up of smaller parts.
Phonics
This half term, we will continue to expand our phonics knowledge by learning new graphemes and phonemes while also reinforcing our understanding of previously taught sounds. We will focus on improving our recognition of hard to read and spell words, helping us to build fluency in our reading. We will also work on gaining greater independence in segmenting words and spelling them correctly.
PE
In PE, we will focus on developing our understanding of how to play different games, thinking about why rules are important and how to follow them. We will practice keeping score and work on developing skills for playing cooperatively with others, whether working as a team or playing against an opponent. Through different activities, we will also think about the importance of fair play, learning how to win and lose with good sportsmanship..
Art
In Art, we will explore different ways to represent journeys through creative projects. We will experiment with colour, texture, and different artistic techniques to create underwater art inspired by sea creatures and ocean adventures. We will also create space-themed artwork, using a range of materials to design planets and stars.
Music
This half term, we will focus on rhythm and beat, learning to move, play, and sing in time to music. We will explore different ways to create and perform simple rhythms, using a variety of instruments such as drums, shakers, and tambourines. Working in small groups, we will experiment with different sounds, listening carefully to how they blend together to create music. These activities will help us develop confidence in performing.
RE
In our RE lessons, we will learn about important religious celebrations and traditions. As we explore Ramadan, we will learn why this special month is observed and how it is celebrated by Muslims around the world. We will also learn about Shrove Tuesday and Lent, thinking about their significance in the Christian calendar. Later in the half term, we will explore the themes of Easter and new life, learning about the Easter story and the symbols that represent renewal and fresh beginnings. These discussions and activities will help us appreciate different beliefs and traditions, fostering respect and understanding for different cultures and faiths.
PSHE
Our PSHE focus this half term is ‘Healthy Me’, where we will learn about the importance of looking after our bodies and minds. We will explore how being active helps us to stay strong and healthy, thinking about the different ways we can exercise and move our bodies. We will also learn about making healthy food choices, understanding why a balanced diet is important for our growth and well-being. Personal hygiene will also be a key focus, as we learn about keeping clean, washing our hands properly, and looking after our teeth.
We are looking forward to a half term full of learning, discovery, and exciting adventures!
