Welcome to Year 1!

Our teacher is Mrs Davis, and our TAs are Mrs Gilli-Ros, Mrs Weller, Mrs Trott and Mrs Reese.

Summer Term 2023

In our 'Wonderful world' topic, Year 1 will learning all about the Uk, including it's countries, capitals and flags. We will be learning where we are on a world map and pinpointing landmarks such as Chipperfield and the river Thames. We will also be comparing the lives of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 1, looking at their own lives and the different time periods they reigned in.  In Science we are learning about seasonal changes, weather and will be closely watching our plants grow! In DT we will learn all about woodwork, including using real tools and the safety rules that surround them. After half term our topic changes to 'journeys' and we will be learning all about space. We have a really exciting Neil Armstrong experience day to look forward to! Our Science focus becomes pets, identifying, describing and comparing them. We will be looking at dinosaurs too, linked to our science work on classification of animals.

Our English lessons start with poetry, writing our own free verse poems about colour. We will then move onto stories about the Uk, including the Loch Ness Monster! Our focus will be on adjectives, suffixes and joining words. We will also be learning how to spell the Year 1 common exception words. After half term we will be writing our own stories, using dinosaurs and space as starting points. Our focus, alongside the spelling of common exception words will be editing our own work and checking that what we have written makes sense to the reader.

In the first half term our Art lessons we will be looking at painting and mark making, using the book 'Dot' as inspiration. We will also be working on sculpture, making a 3D globe. After half term we will be making dinosaur worlds and printing dinosaur footprints. We will also be using our space work for all kinds of self initiated models and paintings.

In our Maths lessons we will be learning all about money and time. We will also start basic multiplication and division through the concepts of sharing and problem solving. We then move onto fractions and capacity. Lastly we work on place value to 100 and alongside this we learn about estimating, ordering and comparing.

Our PE sessions for the first half term will focus on fitness and fielding/striking. Mrs Reese will be taking us to the tennis courts to practice our striking skills and fitness is closely linked to one of our 5 ways to well being, keeping active. We will talk about what type of exercise we enjoy and how it makes us feel. After half term we will be practicing our athletics; running, jumping and throwing ready for sports day!

Our value for the first half term is 'cooperation'. As well as this theme being incorporated into our RE lessons, we will also be applying it in all areas of our learning and school life. We will be performing a whole school assembly about cooperation! After half term the school value changes to 'courage'.  We will learn about different religious traditions and Jesus's journeys in the New Testament. Alongside both of these, we will be talking about the 5 ways to wellbeing. These are connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.

In our PSHE sessions we will be continuing with our JIGSAW scheme of work. The topic for the first half term is relationships. We will discuss what a relationship is and how we have all types of different relationships such as friendships, family and with school staff. This also links with our work about cooperation. After half term we move onto the  topic of changing me. The work we do within this topic will also help prepare us for the move to year 2!
