PE
Our school delivers a high-quality physical education curriculum to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physical activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Children are given many opportunities to compete in sport and become leaders to help build character and help to embed the ‘Spirit of the Games’ values such as honesty, determination, self-belief, passion and respect. Our curriculum aims to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities through a progression of skills and sports, to give opportunities to play competitively and to engage children to lead healthy, active lives. To make meaningful links, dance is often linked with topic areas.
Being part of the DSSN enables all our children to access a range of competitive sports throughout the year to enhance PE lessons. ‘Active 10’ is carried out in classes each day to ensure we are offering extra physical activity and it is encouraged that there is additional activity in other curriculum areas, using subscriptions such as ‘Maths of the Day’. Playground Leaders organise physical activities at playtimes to ensure all children have access to physical activity. To embellish the curriculum, provide new experiences and continue staff’s knowledge and confidence, outside agencies (such as Watford FC, Premier Sport and Saracens) are regularly organised to lead sessions in classes.
A range of extra-curricular activities are on offer and rotated throughout the year. Some are provided by school staff and others by outside agencies. Year 4 and 6 are given the opportunity to attend residential trips at Kingswood and PGL centres where the focus is on physical activity, reward and social skills. Every year group attends inter-school sports events provided through the Dacorum Schools Sports Partnership, to enhance the PE curriculum and provide opportunities for all. Children with particular skills in sports are given many opportunities to represent the school at events throughout the year where they can celebrated.
